Facing Divorce

I probably spent two years deciding whether or not I could leave my ex-husband. I know now that my marriage was never healthy, solid, full of love and happiness. But he was the father of my daughter. He was my High School Sweetheart. I had a million excuses for staying. I had a million and one for leaving. It isn't easy. Believe me, I tried. And tried, and tried. I think back, and I was probably the only one trying. Marriage counseling, researching, trying to do what "a good wife does". I was giving my all. And every day, I would be lied to, manipulated, verbally and emotionally abused, and I just couldn't take it anymore. My daughter was three years old. We were fighting way too much. She was starting to understand. She was starting to pick up on the tension and hurt. She could not be raised in this environment. So, on that June evening in 2005, we left. But it still wasn't easy! Where do we go? How do I support us? Why do some family and friends just not understand? What about child support, visitation, divorce papers? CUSTODY? Do I want to date, or do I want to be alone? Am I making the right decision for my daughter and myself? I can say with 100% certainty, for me, I made the right decision. I divorced the father of my baby, and moved on with my life. I later remarried, and my daughter and I are happier, healthier, and safer than we would have ever been. Her father is very active in her life (which means he is still in my life), and she loves him, but she is much better off, and she adores my new husband. We are a family. Deciding to separate or get divorced is a very personal decision. You need to think about your future and your children's futures. I have learned that it is never good to stay married "for the sake of the kids". I have learned that kids, especially the younger ones, are very resilient. They will love you no matter what choice you make. I made the right one. I pray that you do as well. Good luck.
